About the Department

Chemistry is the most central of all the sciences. Much of our understanding of the material world is based on the areas of Chemistry which are conventionally called Inorganic, Organic, Physical or Theoretical; but Chemistry is also central to other disciplines such as Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Materials Science, Medicine, Mineralogy, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology and Physics. This breadth is reflected in our research

The key features of our present success and future strategy are:

The development of fundamental understanding, with the emphasis on new structural, synthetic and theoretical techniques applicable in both academic and industrial contexts;

Recruitment of the highest quality academic staff, encouraging all to develop an independent research group with the freedom to associate with other groups;

Recruitment of the best possible phd students and research staff. The number of research workers has increased by nearly 50% over the last ten years without compromising quality;

The pursuit of interdisciplinary collaborations, within the department, with other departments in the university, and with external industrial and academic institutions;

Updating and extending the 'fabric of the laboratory' building to provide the best possible environment for all our research activities;
Using multi-disciplinary study and research, our philosophy is to craft individualized programs for students, enabling them to acquire new knowledge through strong mentoring and outstanding intellectual and physical resources.

Our collegial atmosphere connects undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows closely with faculty and staff. We provide an environment that stimulates the mind with active seminar and endowed lectureship programs and nourishes the soul (or maybe just the metabolism)
